Drifter

Wandering Homeless

When the Gate Incident happened, it took the economy with it. Schools closed, farmers were evicted from their land, suburbs crumbled, and entire towns dried up and blew away. Many of the newly homeless banded together for protection, creating entire moving caravans of former middle-class citizens. Quickly learning the rules of the spacelanes, the newly formed Packs learned how to defend themselves against pirate gangs and government agents alike. Often depending only upon themselves, the travelling Packs have become a strange mix of self-sufficient wanderers and locust-like scavangers. Others took a very different route, wandering aimlessly among the worlds and colonies with no real direction in their lives--just peacefully living from one meal to the next.

Ironically, Drifters are some of the most well-educated people in the modern era. Decended from teachers, doctors, workers, and farmers, the Drifters can adapt to a surprising number of situations and events. Always on the lookout for migrant work and a place to set up a safe camp, the Drifter scouts often travel into the cities for needed supplies and current info. Drifters can be extremely useful to a team who knows how to employ their skills.

Antonio, Carlos & Jobin

ANTONIO: I used to fly every day.
CARLOS: We sure did.
JOBIN: I'd love to fly again, maybe as far as Saturn.
CARLOS: You liar!
ANTONIO: The biggest thing you ever flew was a crop duster.
JOBIN: Is that right? Where are we headed? Saturn?
ANTONIO: No, we're only going as far as Alva City.
JOBIN: Reminds me of the time my squadron sank the Bismarck.
ANTONIO: You old liar, that was back in WWII!
JOBIN: It was?

"Would you like an egg, Mackenroe? You sure? Eggs are good. As they say, power and charge. That's what's important, Macintosh. Why is it that I can't ever remember my assistant's name? Don't worry about the small things in life Macky-Mike. There's work to do, hurry up Mackin-whatever!"
